On Dec 29th, Care2 reported to their members via email that their systems were hacked and member information was accessed. They also posted information on their website about the intrusion, which included this information:
We sent a warning email about our recent hacking incident to everybody who had at some point in the past 12 years created an account on the Care2.com website. This includes people who signed online petitions at our petition website, ThePetitionSite.com. You might not recall having ever done this, which would make our warning email confusing. Still, we thought it better to notify everyone, risking some confusion, then to risk that your email address was accessed without your knowledge.
The warning was legitimate. The reason you received it is that your email address was in our system at the time of the hacking.
